LOS ANGELES, October 9, 2024 – Nova Labs, a pioneer in decentralized wireless communications, today announced a partnership with American Bandwidth (Ameriband), a leader in Wi-Fi infrastructure, to integrate Ameriband’s network of over 100,000 access points. Through this partnership, the Helium Network expands by adding hundreds of thousands of new enterprise-grade access points, which are like mini cell towers, rapidly growing the coverage footprint across the U.S. almost overnight. To do this, Nova Labs created a bridge that enables existing infrastructure to be converted into useful coverage for the Helium Network and crypto economy. This collaboration demonstrates the power and scale of a network owned by the people compared to massive and costly cell towers deployed by traditional telco.
This partnership enables Ameriband to leverage the largest decentralized, people-powered network in North America, providing mobile carriers—including major telecom operators and virtual carriers (MNOs and MVNOs)— with a novel and more affordable solution for data offloading powered by the Helium Network’s crypto incentive model. The Helium Carrier Offload is the largest decentralized carrier offload in North America with three major carriers already using it. It provides carriers with the ability to reduce data traffic by utilizing Helium's decentralized network of Hotspots owned by individuals. By offloading traffic onto the Helium Network, carriers can optimize their service, reduce congestion, and lower operational costs, all while maintaining seamless connectivity for their subscribers. When subscribers from other carriers connect through the offload network, Hotspot operators are rewarded with crypto.
As one of the first major players to embrace this decentralized model, Ameriband is paving the way for broader adoption of people-powered mobile infrastructure. With this rapid growth, subscribers of Helium Mobile’s phone plan will experience even more expansive coverage, improving connectivity in a wider range of locations. This collaboration demonstrates how a network owned by individuals can provide an alternative and cost-effective solution for carriers while rewarding Hotspot operators and infrastructure partners like Ameriband through a new incentive model.
“We think Helium Mobile is pushing the forefront of the wireless industry with innovation in decentralized carrier offloading, and we’re pleased to be a part of that and expand our capabilities for our stakeholders," said Howard Buzick, SVP of Business Development at Ameriband. “This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the evolution of wireless networks, providing a powerful solution for mobile operators while delivering top-tier connectivity for end users.”
“This partnership with Ameriband marks a significant milestone in the growth of the Helium Carrier Offload. By integrating their extensive network of enterprise-grade access points, we are not only expanding coverage and capacity but also demonstrating the power of decentralized wireless infrastructure to advance the telecom industry,” said Mario Di Dio, GM of Network at Nova Labs.
